I’ve been in a Car Accident. Now what?

While no one hopes to be in a car accident, being prepared can help you handle the unexpected.  There are a few steps you can follow in the event of an accident that can make the process of physical and financial recovery much smoother.

Safety is the Number 1 Priority

First, turn on your hazard lights, and if possible pull your car over to a safe place.  If it’s not possible to move your care, stay inside with your seatbelt on.  If you can, check on the safety of others and assist anyone who is injured.  Only move an injured person if their immediate safety is threatened.

Contact the Authorities

In some states, no matter how small the accident you must call the authorities.  To do this, call 911 or the direct line to the local police department.  Avoid taking blame for the accident, even if you feel guilty.  It’s possible the other driver was actually at fault or that you share the blame.  It’s also recommended that you visit the emergency room or your doctor after you leave the area.  Always file an accident report, even if the police don’t come to the crash site. Filing a report can help speed up the claim process.

Gather the Facts

It’s important to remain calm and make note of all the important information from the crash.  Document the accident as you experienced it.  Take pictures of your car, other cars involved, and the surrounding area.  Take notes about what happened before, during, and after the crash, including details about location, weather, road conditions, and traffic control.  Write down the names of any law enforcement officials or witnesses who are at the scene.

Exchange Information

Be sure to swap information with the other drivers, as this is an essential step to work through any sort of claim or legal process that could result from a car accident.  Exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, license plate number, driver’s license numbers, insurance providers, and policy numbers.

Next Steps

Once you’ve safely left the scene of the accident, you’ll still need to file a claim, and you’ll want to do this as soon as possible.  The sooner you file your claim, the sooner your insurance provider can start working on it.
